Despite the Hawaiian titles, this is much more of a jazz record, clearly inspired by Frank Trumbauer's OKeh recordings such as "Singin' the Blues." Recorded in Los Angeles in 1929, this quartet sounds like a larger band due to clever arranging and most members playing multiple instruments. A few scratches on "Hula Girl," also a pressing anomaly on that side causes swish in the first several seconds of the music in the left channel only. Light scuffs on both sides. Plays best with a 2.8-mil stylus, mild occasional distortion.
